Quebec Faces Legal Action Over Family Reunification Delays

Roy Hon 13 Mar 2025

The Quebec government is being sued for discriminatory delays in family reunification applications, as processing times exceed 34 months on average. The province has set an annual cap of 10,400 family sponsorship applications, significantly delaying approvals.

Advocates argue that these restrictions disproportionately impact immigrants who are unable to reunite with their spouses, children, and parents in a reasonable timeframe. Lawyers representing affected families have filed a lawsuit, claiming the delays violate human rights and Canada’s immigration commitments.
